LIGATT Security Issues Alert: Telephone Spoofing Service Allows You to Check Your Boyfriend's, Girlfriend's, CEO's, Competitors' and Almost Anyone's Cell Phone Voicemail

LOS ANGELES, Nov 15, 2007 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Telephone spoofing services like SPOOFEM.COM (a service by LIGATT Security) give you the ability to check the voicemail on most cell phone carriers such as Sprint, Verizon, Cingular, or T-Mobile. Telephone spoofing allows you to call any number and have any number you like show up in the person's caller ID. Although the cell phone companies are aware of this loophole in their system, there is little they can do.

How it works is simpler than you may think. When you set up the voicemail on your cell phone, you are given the option to enter a pass code every time you check your voicemail or to automatically login and bypass entering your pass code when calling from your own cell phone. If a person using a caller ID spoofing service calls a person's cell phone and puts in your cell phone number as the caller ID number, the cell phone provider thinks that you are calling from your personal cell phone and will send the call to voicemail. If you have your voicemail set up to automatically login without entering a pass code, it will give the person spoofing the call full access to your voicemail. Once a person has gained access they can listen to new and saved voicemails; and as long as they do not delete any messages but listen then skip each message by pressing the "#" key, the owner of the voicemail would not know that someone has checked their voicemail.

To make sure that this does not happen to you, all you have to do is set your voicemail to ask for a pass code to enter. By doing this you will have to enter a pass code before you can have access to your voicemail.
